Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party Tour — Night One

★★★★★4.5/5
ACL Live at The Moody Theater, Austin, TX
May 2, 2026

There's something almost surreal about watching Hayley Williams walk out alone onto a stage this big. No Taylor York anchoring the left side, no Zac Farro holding down the rhythm behind her. Just her, a band of collaborators, and twenty songs from Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party — the album she's been quietly building toward her entire career.

The show opened with Mirtazapine, its woozy synth swells filling the Moody Theater as the lights dropped low and the room held its breath. It was an immediate statement: this is not a nostalgia tour. From there, she moved through Showbiz, Disappearing Man, and Zissou with a looseness that felt hard-won — the comfort of an artist performing songs she wrote entirely for herself, free of obligation.

Ice in My OJ landed as one of the night's early peaks, the crowd already locked in and singing back every syllable. Hard and Kill Me followed with a bruising emotional charge that reminded you just how much this record deals with darkness dressed in melody.

Mid-set, she took a breath during Love Me Different to acknowledge the venue itself — noting that Phoenix had once taped an ACL Live session in this same room, a small offhand moment that made the theater feel even more storied than it already is. Then came the Nina Simone cover, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, delivered with a kind of controlled ferocity that stopped the room cold.

The tape intros threading the set together — haunted, cinematic little bridges between songs — gave the whole show the feel of a carefully constructed album experience rather than a standard concert, and it worked.

Dream Girl in Shibuya hit with particular force live, the song's emotional heft magnified in the room. Good Ol' Days closed the main set on a bittersweet high.

The encore arrived with its own intro tape, then opened into Discovery Channel before bringing the night home. The closer left the crowd buzzing — but also wanting more. And that's where the half-star gets docked. You're in Austin, night one of two. The room was primed. The energy was there. A surprise guest for the encore — a Paramore deep cut with a familiar face, a collaborator from the record, anyone — would have pushed this into legendary territory. It didn't happen, and you felt the absence of that potential moment.

Still: what Hayley Williams delivered at ACL Live on May 2nd was a master class in owning a room on your own terms. No safety net, no catalog crutch, no compromise. Just the songs, the voice, and twenty years of earned confidence finally pointing entirely inward.
